BioThane Care Guide
Made for real dog adventures. Waterproof, easy to clean, and designed to last.
What is BioThane?
BioThane looks and feels like leather, but it’s made with a durable PVC outer coating and a strong nylon core.
It’s been tested with real dogs and horses and is built for everyday life: getting wet, muddy, dragged, pulled, and taken on all the adventures your dog can dream up.
One of the best things about genuine BioThane is how easy it is to care for. It’s waterproof, stink resistant, and wipes clean in seconds.
That said, while it’s incredibly durable, it isn’t completely stain-proof. Things like permanent marker, paint, and red dirt may stain lighter colours. It’s also highly odor resistant, but very strong smells like skunk may linger.
Everyday Cleaning
For regular dirt, drool, or everyday wear:
- Rinse with lukewarm water
- Use a small amount of mild soap
- Wipe gently with a soft cloth or sponge
- Rinse away any soap residue
- Dry fully before storing
For most dogs, this is all it needs.
Preventing Cracking Over Time
While BioThane is extremely durable, all coated waterproof materials can eventually show wear in high-flex areas over time.
This is most common around:
- buckle holes
- leash handles
- folds near hardware
- places that rub against hands, jackets, or tags
Over months and years of regular use, natural oils from our hands, sunscreen, saltwater, dirt, and repeated bending can slowly dry out the outer coating, which may eventually lead to cracking.
The best way to help prevent this:
- wash gently with mild soap and water 1–2 times per month
- always rinse after beach or lake days
- dry thoroughly before storing
- avoid leaving gear in hot cars or direct sunlight for long periods
- avoid prolonged exposure to lotion, bug spray, or skin oils
A little regular cleaning truly makes the biggest difference!
BioThane is Not Chew Proof
Our BioThane gear is made to handle rain, mud, swimming, and everyday adventures.
However, it is not chew proof.
Sharp puppy teeth or heavy chewing can puncture or split the outer coating. We always recommend supervising dogs who are known chewers and avoiding leaving leashes or collars accessible as a toy.
Chew damage is considered accidental damage and not a product defect.
A Note on Natural Wear
Our gear is designed for real dogs doing real dog things.
Over time, signs of wear in flex points, buckle holes, and hardware contact areas are completely normal, especially after years of adventures. This kind of aging is cosmetic and often simply a sign of a very loved leash or collar.
Walk By Good Boy Brand Warranty
If you come across any issues with the hardware of your leash or collar in its lifetime, we are happy to replace the hardware on your leash for you. Hardware includes all stainless steel elements of your leash or collar (ie clips, rings and screws). Please note: In rare cases, hardware replacements sometimes require us to shorten your lead.
Damage caused by chewing, cutting/catching, long term wear or misuse of the product will not be considered under warranty for replacement.
Built for adventure, cared for with love.
